AFRIKANUS NEW COLLECTION

Zimbabwe Fashion Week veteran Jose Rui Lopes from Angola never disappoints with his runway offerings, and this year was no different. This 2014 ZFW collection featured slim-cut harem-style pants tapered at the ankle in African print fabrics. Midriff-baring wrap-and-tie tops kept it sexy and were the perfect proportional balance to a bottom half with impact.
Mixing print with white is a signature from Lopes and this collection varied from the fun and flirty with a deep-V neck and flouncy skirt to the statuesque and regal with a high and wide collar and belted waist. A masterful use of chiffon kept it light and fresh, and it's a winning set of looks from the Angolan designer.
The high necklines continued in a chiffon print maxi-dress with a drawstring neckline - a full-length hemline and covered bust in no way made this look unsexy, with its nipped in waist and elongating cut. Jose Rui Lopes does proportion very well, as demonstrated again in this print jumpsuit with its tall eye-line.
This is perfectly ethnically-inspired ready-to-wear and uses print with prefect restraint and finesse. The mix of refreshing retro prints maintains a modern cool to the collection, as does the use of easy-breezy fabrics. A thumbs up.
